Lori's Favorite Grape Leaves

Total Time: 2 hrs 15 mins Preparation Time: 45 mins Cook Time: 1 hr 30 mins

Ingredients

  • Servings: 10
  • 1 (20 ounce) jar grape leaves
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion (minced)
  • 1 small garlic clove (minced)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup rice
  • 1 tablespoon mint (minced)
  • 1 tablespoon parsley (minced)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • fresh cracked pepper (to taste)
  • 1 pinch ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup currants
  • 2 tablespoons pine nuts
  • 2 tablespoons port wine
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 a lemon, juice of
  • lemon slice

Recipe

  • 1 drain leaves. separate. soak to remove brine.
  • 2 dry on paper towels.
  • 3 heat oil in a skillet.
  • 4 add the beef, onion and garlic. brown.
  • 5 add the water, tomato sauce, rice,.
  • 6 mint, parsley, salt, pepper, cinnamon, currants, pine nuts and port.
  • 7 bring to a boil. reduce. cover. simmer 15 minutes.
  • 8 let cool.
  • 9 remove stems from leaves. place stem side up on counter.
  • 10 place 1-2 teaspoons of filling on each.
  • 11 fold in sides then roll up tightly.
  • 12 line the bottom of a large skillet with 4 of the leaves. top with rolls, fitting them snuggly.
  • 13 add water and lemon juice.
  • 14 place a plate on top.
  • 15 bring to a boil. reduce. cover. simmer 45 minutes.
  • 16 serve with lemon slices.
